THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF DISCS AVAILABLE
Here at SPIN we can offer two methods of manufacturing CD or DVDs: Short-run or Production-run.
Read this page to see what type of disc you will be doing.
DESIGNING A DISC FACE FOR SHORT RUN (50 - 200 UNITS)
For SHORT run discs (CD-R/DVD-R), there are three printing options:
- Black Thermal Print (economical and very professional)
- Full Color Paper Label (economical and high quality labels)
- Full Color Thermal Print (a bit more expensive, but worth it!)
 |
BLACK THERMAL PRINT
(SHORT RUN ONLY)
Available on either silver or white discs, this printing process works best for high contrast line art or text, but does not work as well for grayscale images, especially faint ones. Full coverage (large areas of black) are not used. Designs will be submitted in 300 dpi black or grayscale. Ideal for text-based designs, or ones featuring a black&white logo.

FULL COLOR PAPER LABEL
(SHORT RUN ONLY)
Printed on the same machine as the paper print for the jewel box, it gives you the best chance to exactly match colors on the disc to that of the packaging (if that is important to your design). It is also the most economical way to have a color disc. Please design at 350 dpi CMYK (same as the rest of the package), and include 0.25" of bleed. Please indicate if you want a large or small central hole in the label.

FULL COLOR THERMAL PRINT
(SHORT RUN ONLY)
The best quality available in short run, this full color image is printed on silver or white discs (white is recommended), and gives great results. The final disc is very durable, and water resistant (unlike many inkjet printed discs which smear quite easily). Please design at 350 dpi, CMYK. Note color may not be an exact match to other print.

DESIGNING A DISC FACE FOR PRODUCTION RUN (500+ UNITS)
For PRODUCTION run discs (CD-R/DVD-R), there are three printing options:
- 1-6 Silkscreened Pantone Colors (3 is standard)
- Silkscreened CMYK (with white base makes a 5 color disc)
- Offset Printed CMYK (a bit more expensive, minimum 1000, but great results)
 |
SILKSCREENED PANTONE COLORS
(PRODUCTION RUN ONLY)
The industry standard printing method, it is both economical and gives good results. The disc face is designed using up to 6 Pantone colored inks (3 is standard, additional inks incur a slight extra charge). When specifying colors, use the Solid Coated library only. Pantone colors can also be combined with any or all of the 4 standard colors (CMYK). Since vector text and graphics can be used with spot colors, the final results can be very crisp and clean. Toned images should be 200 dpi. If white is desired, it must be specified as a color to be used.

SILKSCREENED CMYK
(PRODUCTION RUN ONLY)
To print full color images, it is possible to use the CMYK process colors, which usually requires a white base layer (an additional 5th color) for best results. Images should be 200 dpi (line screen is 100 lines per inch).

OFFSET PRINTED CMYK
(PRODUCTION RUN ONLY)
The best quality available for CMYK disc faces, offset printed discs have a higher line screen than silkscreened, allowing finer detail. They take a bit longer, cost a bit more, and have higher minimums (min 1000), but the final results make it worthwhile.

CONVERTING FROM CMYK TO PANTONE
If you've settled on a color in CMYK for your paper print, and you'd like to know the closest Pantone color to use for a disc face, you can find some information in the Pantone to CMYK Conversion document. While the color match will not be exact, by choosing a complementary Pantone / CMYK mix, you can come quite close.
